General Information
In the current landscape, numerous employers value practical work experience. An internship provides an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during your studies, enabling you to enhance existing skills and acquire new ones. This not only increases your prospects of being hired by your desired company but also positions you favorably for entrepreneurial endeavors.
Success lies in preparation! A crucial aspect is consistently honing your interview skills. Whether practicing with a family member, a friend, or a professor, this helps refine your ability to effectively showcase your strengths.
Emphasizing your skills and adhering to phone interview etiquette are paramount. Additionally, adhering to common tips can contribute to a successful interview—conducting thorough research on the company, jotting down key facts about their activities, optimizing your surroundings, and rehearsing responses to common interview questions.
An often-seen error in crafting a CV is the chronological listing of all experiences. Instead, leverage your CV to showcase strengths and skills relevant to the job. For example, if you’re applying for a marketing internship, consider including photography as a hobby to signal creativity.
Moreover, strive for brevity and conciseness—your CV should not extend beyond one A4 page
If this marks your initial internship in this particular industry or department, anticipate a significant learning curve. Challenges may arise, constituting an integral part of the learning journey. Maintaining an open mind is crucial, especially in an international work setting where cultural differences might surface. Effective communication can resolve most issues, and our on-site staff, trained to assist in any situation, is always available if you encounter difficulties. Feel free to unwind during the weekend activities!
The initial day of your internship holds significant importance as first impressions matter. Here are some tips:
- Punctuality is key! We recommend arriving near your workplace approximately half an hour before your scheduled start.
- Familiarize yourself with your role. Review the job description beforehand to ensure preparedness.
- Dress professionally. A polished appearance will always leave a positive impression. (For instance, avoid wearing flip-flops to work!)
- Practice active listening. Be inquisitive on your first day and attentively listen to your supervisor and colleagues. Ultimately, you are there to glean knowledge from them.
Each type of company offers its own advantages. Broadly speaking, large companies tend to have a more rigid structure, well-defined protocols, and stringent rules. Your role is explicitly outlined, and you may not deviate much from your designated responsibilities or team.
Conversely, smaller companies operate with greater flexibility and dynamism. While you still have a specific job description, it’s common for you to engage in various projects, allowing you to broaden your knowledge and skills. In such cases, you gain a more comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of a company.
STSicily has demonstrated in previous instances that internships serve as an effective pathway for recent graduates to secure full-time employment. One out of every ten interns has received offers to either return to their internship or transition into a full-time position post-graduation. The likelihood of such opportunities is contingent upon the host company’s requirements and capacity to hire new personnel, along with the intern’s performance and qualifications.
